Topographic Map



Topography is the study of Earth's surface shape and features. Topographic Maps record the relief (elevation) of the terrain, the three dimensional quality of the surface and identification of specific landforms.Topographic maps show the physical characteristics of land in an area and the built changes in the landscape. It displays topographic features by means of contour lines. Topographic maps are one of the several "Contour maps". In this example of a Topographic Map, the map is color coded to depict what form the area of land is: Brown exemplifies the contour lines of elevation; White is an area of no vegetation; Green depicts vegetation such as forests and grasslands; Blue represents water such as a sea, ocean, lake, river, or pond.
